Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He was the son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant and was the oldest of six children. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1843. He served in the Mexican-American War and was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was later elected the 18th President of the United States in 1868 and served two terms.
